Envisioning the Future of Digital Democracy
How can digital democracy evolve alongside rapid technological and social change?
The fifth INNOVADE Living Lab, held in Leuven on 7 May 2026, explored how emerging technologies, evolving social expectations and governance frameworks can shape the future of digital democratic participation. Bringing together researchers, public authorities, technology experts and civil society representatives, the Lab examined practical challenges around AI, digital identity, e-voting, citizen engagement, accessibility, privacy and trust.
The discussions highlighted that successful digital democracy requires more than innovative technology. Inclusion, transparency, political commitment, privacy, accessibility and long-term institutional integration are essential for building platforms that citizens can trust and use. The workshops also explored how AI-assisted proposal management, hybrid participation, secure authentication and new approaches to citizen engagement could strengthen democratic processes.
A key message from Living Lab 5 was clear: digital democracy must be designed around citizens and democratic values, not technology alone. The findings provide important insights for the continued development of the INNOVADE Digital Democracy Application and future policy recommendations.
